韓国梨花女子大の学生といっしょに英語で即興型のディベートを学びます。交流活動もあります。

This is an intensive debating course based on a memorandum between the two English Departments of Kyushu University Faculty of Languages & Cultures and Korea’s Ewha Womans University. Both Kyushu and Ewha students will join the lectures and practice debates to learn basics in extemporaneous competitive debating “Parliamentary Debate” in English. Lectures on debating and debate topics will be given by Professor Peter Kipp from Ewha and other invited lecturers. There will be welcome and farewell parties (attendance is optional).
The class schedule is as follows: 2/14. Wed. Parliamentary Debate Workshop Day 1. 2/15. Thu. Parliamentary Debate Workshop Day 2. 2/16. Fri. Parliamentary Debate Workshop Day 3. (Mini class tournament)

The format for the Winter 2018 workshop will be Asian Parliamentary debate. No prior experience in debate is necessary; however, such students are encouraged to learn about debating before coming to the first meeting by reading a simple textbook and or watching video lectures from a similar course in the past.
The basics of the format will be taught as part of the workshop. For more explanation of the format, see the following document: "UADC Tournament Rules" (downloadable from below). A simplified and clarified version of the rules will be distributed to workshop participants.

15:30 – 17:00: Session 1 Motion Analysis and Framing Debates (Lecture + Speech Practice--PM and LO Speeches)
17:10 – 19:00: Session 2 Practice Debates & Feedback (lecturers and very experienced debaters will judge; total beginners may opt to watch one of the debates and learn more about the format & strategy)
(19:00-21:00: Dinner/Welcome Party at Big Orange Restaurant)

10:30 – 12:20: Session 4 Case Building and Discussion
12:30 – 13:30: Lunch
13:40 – 15:50: Session 5 Practice Debates & Feedback (Experienced debaters team up with beginners for extra support; lecturers and some other experienced debaters will judge.)
16:00-17:30: Session 6 Skills and Strategy Sessions: (Possible topics—Rebuttals, POIs, Making Models)

This is a tentative schedule. Workshop Day 3. Friday, February 16. Room 2107 and others. ----------------------------------------- 9:00 – 10:20: Session 7 Subject matter lecture (Topic TBA)
10:30 – 12:20: Session 8 Case Building and Discussion Sessions 7 & 8 would follow the same general plan as the morning sessions on Day 2.
12:30 – 13:30: Lunch
13:40 – 15:30: Session 9 Mini-Tournament Round 1.
15:40-17:30: Session 10 Mini-Tournament Round 2. The tournament would follow the same general plan as the practice debates on the afternoons of Day 1 and Day 2.
17:40: Announcement of Mini-Tournament Champion and Best Speaker. Closing Ceremony.

If you are not familiar with competitive parliamentary debate, try to learn about it before coming to the first meeting. When the subject matter topics will be announced (at least two weeks before the course), read the recommended articles and other information about those topics.
