This lecture is aimed at master course students in scientific discipline who wish to write academic papers in English. This is a beginner level lecture focuses on language, structure and readability issues. It also tells you the essential elements to include in each section of a paper. This lecture is particularly useful for the students whose first language is not English.

The learning goals is to understand and grasp the rules of good writing in English such as clarity, logic, conciseness, no ambiguity, and the highest level of readability possible. The students are expected to be able to write understandable academic reports in English.

Sufficient exercise and communication through exchange of ideas in class must be done to understand the rules of good writing in English.

Week 1: Introduction Week 2: The fundamental issue: Word Order Week 3: Short is better: Breaking Up Long Sentences Week 4: Structuring Paragraphs and Sentences Week 5: Being Concise and Removing Redundancy Week 6: Avoiding Ambiguity Week 7: Clarifying Who Did What; Highlighting Your Findings Week 8: Hedging and Criticizing; Paraphrasing and Plagiarism (Submission of the 1st academic essay before week 9) Week 9: Titles Week 10: Abstracts Week 11: Introduction & Literature Week 12: Methods & Results Week 13: Discussion & Conclusions Week 14: Useful Phrases Week 15: The Final Check (Submission of the 2nd academic essay before week 16)
