This course covers several thermal-relating engine technologies featuring the ones actually applied to reciprocating internal combustion engines. The following topics are picked up and discussed in detail. 1) In-cylinder heat transfer phenomena and cooling-loss recovery problems 2) In-cylinder turbulent flow and its combustion promoting effects 3) Spray propagation with droplets break-up and evaporation process 4) Definition of pumping loss in engines and its reduction methods 5) Significance of gasoline direct injection concept and its combustion difficulties 6) Heat cycle theory of Miller system and its actual application 7) Hybrid strategy and evaluation of its total efficiency 8) Engine performance versus its operating speed and transmission 9) Engine lubrication problem and reduction of friction loss
