This course investigates the contested legacies of colonialism and the unfinished project of decolonization in Taiwan. For over four decades after World War II, the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) maintained an authoritarian regime that suppressed open discussion of the Japanese colonial period and the Asia-Pacific War. With democratization in the 1990s, these silenced histories resurfaced, fueling debates about identity, memory, and Taiwan’s place in the world.

Through a postcolonial lens, we will examine how colonial modernity, memory politics, and cultural heritage shape contemporary Taiwanese society. Topics covered in this course include the reinterpretation of Japanese colonial rule, the role of transitional justice in addressing martial law legacies, the politics of Indigenous rights, and the island’s shifting relationship with China, Japan, and the global community.

By critically engaging with historical texts, literature, film, and cultural practices, students will explore how Taiwan’s colonial past continues to inform present struggles over identity, sovereignty, and subjectivity. Ultimately, the course encourages students to think beyond nation-centered narratives and to situate Taiwan within broader discussions of empire, decolonization, and global modernity.

This course is structured into five sections.

In the first section, we will explore how the Kuomintang (KMT) established its rule over Taiwan through mechanisms of political repression and economic development. We will examine how, despite facing a series of international crises in the 1970s, Taiwan eventually underwent a democratic transformation in the 1990s.

The second section focuses on the consequences of democratization, particularly the shift in national identity from "Chinese" to "Taiwanese." We will analyze how this transformation has been facilitated by the rewriting of history and how it has intensified tensions between Taiwan and Mainland China.

In the third section, we turn to the phenomenon of "pro-Japan" sentiment in Taiwan. Why do many Taiwanese people retain fond memories of the Japanese colonial period? We will consider how colonial-era structures are preserved and celebrated, and how representations of the Japanese past appear in contemporary Taiwanese popular culture.

The fourth section is devoted to the issues faced by Taiwan's Indigenous peoples. We will investigate their postcolonial condition and consider the possibilities for justice and historical redress within Taiwan's pluralistic society.

Finally, in the fifth section, we will reflect on Taiwan's future, examining its complex and evolving relationships with Mainland China, the United States, and Japan.
